We recently got in touch with the makers of ROR – a high end screen cleaner for multi-layer plastic, glass, and mirror surfaces – and were curious in their recent initiative to bring their products to the consumer end, having them used for cleaning anything from cellphones, to cell phone cameras, and even TVs and larger screens (such as on laptops & iPads.) We decided to pick up some ROR of our own and do some simple quality comparisons to some Monster Screen Cleaner we had lying around.

For starters, we did a simple screen cleaning, as you could see in the above photo. The plastic and glass layering that composes the majority of smartphones and electronics on the market are a perfect surface for the cleaner to work on. While most cleaners feel like a soapy water that quickly evaporates when used, the ROR has a much different consistency; it appears to carry a basic quality to it (as there is a small amount of ammonia inside) and lets it glide and easily break down the oils on the surface, letting you remove them with a napkin (you don’t need to use micro fiber cloths!) and leave the screen bright and glossy. Even better, the larger sprays require a large amount to clean the area, the 1oz eye dropper and 2oz spray  bottle can clean an EVO is just one spray/drop, and an iPad in just two drops. This means just one bottle will last you for months at a time!

Next, we showed the origin of the ROR’s use, camera quality. We dirtied up a Canon lens we had lying around and took comparison shots below.  You can see the dirty/clean difference on the ROR, but even better, we tried it with a generic cleaner, note the blurry results!

In Conclusion, ROR is a fantastic product we suggest to the heavy user with oily hands, or an oily device. Here are the shots we took using the product

Welding helmets come with a variety of forms and sizes. Please choose the most comfortable and secure one if you decide to buy. You also need to consider the weight of the helmet. Choose the lightest welding mask you can find to support your work and ease your back and neck while welding. Picking up the light welding mask should not neglect durability factor. A strong and solid welding hood will certainly be needed.

As technology grows, so it does with welding helmet. There are high-end auto darkening welding masks that will change their lens color darker within less than a second as the electric arc is flashed. Auto darkening welding masks are batteries and/or solar powered and even when the auto darkening filter is not active, they still have protection to keep your eyes from UV and infrared radiation. Generally auto darkening masks are more expensive than the regular ones. Regular masks commonly cost below $40.

Does a welding mask really give you a protection? In many cases, work-related health problems are not happened instantly. The symptoms usually take times to occur, probably within years. In the world of welding, the most common health problems are cataract and sight-hand in coordination. Choosing a properly welding protection is a must thing to do. Understand that a welding mask has a filter shade to adjust the amount of light your eyes might reach and it should be set well. If the filter is set too dark it may disturb the welder to work in detail, on the other hand if the helmet does not filter the light in a certain amount the welder may have a bigger risk of having eye damage. Most auto darkening helmets have features that will enable you to regulate or set the light filters. There is a filter shade selector chart which a welder can manually adjust to meet the application needed.

The maintenance of a welding helmet is relatively easy. You just have to clean it out of dust and dirt.The best way to clean a welding lens is by using ROR Lens Cleaner, it is very affordable and works amazingly!Some welding helmet’s elements are sensitive to direct sunlight, dust and moisture so it is a lot better to keep it from them. Last but not least, remove all batteries from a helmet if it will not be used for at a long time. This is to avoid battery leaking to damage your helmet’s filter. Cleaning Cameras

Remember that your camera is just a tool. Don’t pamper it. You can always buy a new one. If you leave your camera in a closet, it will never get dirty or broken, but you won’t have too many great photographs to show for yourself. Many of the best photographs can only be taken under conditions that will render your equipment wet and/or filthy. That’s life.

The photo at right was the result of spending six hours at the bottom of a canyon in the Navajo Nation. For the entire six hours, sand blew down from the top of the canyon and into a $20,000 Rollei 6008 system. Was there a sickening grinding sound when I focussed my $3000 50mm lens for the next few months? Yes. Did I have to send the camera back to Rollei USA to be cleaned? Yes. Did the camera get stolen in Filthadelphia a couple of years later? Yes. So it really didn’t make sense to obsess over the camera, did it? We can still enjoy this picture even if that 6008 has disappeared. If the camera had been pampered, it would just be in that much better shape for the crook who is using it now.

Lenses

Basic lens cleaning tools are a blower, a microfiber cloth, and lens cleaning fluid (my favorite: Zeiss). Try to blast dust off the lens with the blower or canned air. Finger prints can be removed with a circular wipe of the new miracle micro fiber cloth (my favorite brand is Pentax because it is nice and thick; about $6). Persistent dirt should be removed with lens cleaning fluid, of which the safest is probably Kodak. Always drip the fluid onto the cloth and then wipe the lens; never put fluid directly onto a lens.

Even if your lenses don’t look dirty, every few months you should give exposed surfaces a cleaning withResidual Oil Remover (ROR). Even if you were able to protect your optics from all environmental sources of filth, there would still be crud condensing on your optics as camera bag plastics outgas. It is tough to verify ROR’s claims, but the optics do look visibly clearer after an ROR treatment and the amazing price won’t kill you.

If you are going to use an expensive lens in a dusty or wet environment and don’t want to obsess over your equipment, keep a B+W UV filter on the lens and count on replacing the filter every year or two.

I immediately put it to use as the lens cleaner of choice on my bench. When I first started using it on customers’ lenses and filters, after receiving their repaired lenses they would call to say that I had forgotten to “return the filter” or “didn’t put the front lens element back in.” I explained that everything was indeed intact and that they should look closer — the lenses and filters were so clean that the customers couldn’t see them!

Since then, sales reps have asked me to try their brands of lens cleaners. I put the cleaners through an objective side-by-side test with ROR. The results have always been that no lens cleaner can even come close to the cleaning quality of ROR.

I also use ROR to clean a wide variety of other things, including removal of ink, blood and coffee stains. So far, I have found only one thing that should not be cleaned with ROR and that is film. The emulsion will be destroyed. Like any other cleaning solution, when cleaning an unfamiliar surface, try ROR on an area that is disposable in case there is a problem. To me, ROR is the undisputed King of the Hill of lens cleaners.
